Balázs Bertényi, CTO Industry Environment at Nokia Siemens Networks is a huge golfing aficionado. His biggest moment on the green was when he achieved a hole in one. “I know the odds” says Balazs with a smile.
In his new role as Chair of the 3GPP Technical Specification Group Service and System Aspects* (TSG-SA), he will now be teeing up to face the challenges of driving 3GPP standardization work.
He was appointed to this key role in global mobile standardization at the 3GPP plenary meeting in Kansas City, USA, on March 22.
“We are pleased about the election of Balázs to the TSG-SA chairman as this appointment is an appreciation of his leading contribution to 3GPP standardization work. With this election, the 3GPP community also recognizes our company’s commitment and capabilities to drive global standardization,” said Pertti Lukander, head of NSN Industry Environment.
“I am grateful for the confidence 3GPP has placed in me and I am very happy to accept the responsibility of this chairmanship” stated Balazs.
“My first priority in this new position is to strengthen the technology steering role of TSG-SA to ensure that 3GPP sustainably remains on top of the leaderboard in the standardization league,” he added.

*3GPP is the leading mobile communications standardization body specifying GSM/GERAN, UMTS/HSPA and LTE, and covering both radio as well as the core network. Its importance in the standardization landscape is steadily increasing, particularly with regard to the worldwide growing number of operators deploying LTE.
TSG-SA plays a key role in 3GPP standardization as it is responsible for the overall architecture and service capabilities of systems based on 3GPP specifications. This includes the overall coordination ofthe specification work between the 3GPP Radio Access Networks, Core Networks and Service System Aspects technical specification groups.
