Last year, the buzz at Barcelona was around mobile TV, music and entertainment. This year, mobile broadband seems to be the name of the game.
Lots of talk from vendors and operators about LTE – where NSN has a strong position. Also, considerable interest in how operators can best leverage their existing 3G investments with HSDPA and its coming ability to hit near LTE speeds. Wimax, on the other hand, seems to have faded to the background – a dramatic change from two years ago, when it seemed to be the star of the show.
Access still seems to get the most attention, which is actually too bad from my perspective. In an economically challenged time, it is probably the tools of subscriber data management that will add the most value. Unlocking all the rich data that is trapped in various silos in the network is the both a great challenge and of huge importance.
