Growth is good!! Nokia Siemens Networks’ estimates that the mobile broadband traffic volumes is going to grow by 2600% in the next five years. There are huge opportunities associated with this growth in mobile broadband for telecom operators. To ride this growth wave telecom operators have to upgrade network and build capacity to accommodate the rising data and signaling traffic, which will directly and favorably impact the end-user experience of network performance and service quality. And they need to do so with speed, agility and efficiency.
While incremental changes such as software upgrades or adding extra WCDMA base stations to cope with traffic hotspots can help, telecom operators ultimately have to modernize their infrastructure and plan for the replacement of their major network elements such as Radio Network Controllers (RNCs).
Introducing network cloning
Nokia Siemens Networks offers a first of its kind, innovative Network Cloning Service that upgrades and modernizes Radio Network Controller (RNC) by replicating configuration of old RNC offline in the new one and then swapping the old RNC with the new. If the ‘cloning’ process has been carried out correctly, swapping of external cables is all that is required to switch traffic from the old RNC to the new one. For the telecom operator this means quick hardware upgrade with minimum disruption to the network and risk free data migration, helping them in improving efficiency and in faster time to market. It all adds up to substantial operational expenditure (OPEX) reduction, with typical savings of more than 50% compared to cost associated with conventional upgrade methods.

How Network Cloning works
Replacing an old generation RNC in the conventional way is a painstakingly long manual process and can prove to be costly as each RNC is manage hundreds of base stations. It requires the manual rehoming of hundreds of base stations from the old RNC to the new one. Where a telecom operator has limited resources, this lengthy process can mean as few as 20 base stations per week are swapped over, and a typical RNC may control 250 or more base stations. Moreover, the possibility of human errors can never be totally ruled out.
