Nokia Siemens Networks has been shortlisted for two Global Mobile Awards 2013, to be announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on Feb 26th.
With both of our entries, we demonstrate how to make networks do more – with spectrum, capacity, quality and energy. In the category ‘Best Mobile Infrastructure’, our Liquid Radio Software Suite showcases best-case GSM evolution and HSPA capacity upgrades. In the category “Outstanding LTE contribution”, we showcase our LTE Smart Scheduler, which is an integral software component of all Flexi Multiradio base stations.
Both solutions bring unique and quantifiable benefits to operators. As Ashish Dayama, who spearheaded the LTE entry, comments: “Our Smart Scheduler delivers around 50% higher average throughput compared with typical industry LTE schedulers. This is an important and meaningful comparison because average throughput represents the actual speeds that many subscribers experience. It is a far more useful figure than peak rates which are rarely seen in any network.”
Instead of allocating radio resources to active subscribers in each cell, Smart Scheduler assigns blocks of frequency spectrum to users every millisecond based on the Quality of Service required and the specific application. As a result, operators can use their valuable spectrum much more efficiently.
The Liquid Radio Software Suite for best-case GSM evolution helps operators serve more customers, including smart device users, with their networks. By re-farming GSM frequencies, they can free up 30% more GSM spectrum for 3G and 4G. According to our calculations, the end result is a 20% reduction in the total cost of ownership of radio access.
Perry Suojoki, who sponsored this entry, explains: “The beauty of this solution is that operators can flow capacity where it’s needed, optimize their radio equipment usage, improve network performance and get more out of their spectrum. The result is greater efficiency, less wasted capacity and a better customer experience.”
