During the special month of Ramadan, NSN’s Middle East & Asia team organized a series of events in Saudi Arabia and UAE to demonstrate the first live Voice over LTE calls (VoLTE) in the region. During the event, over 200 operator customers experienced live VoLTE with high-definition voice (HD Voice) and video calls firsthand. The events showcased how VoLTE works on NSN’s existing commercial hardware and demonstrated our standard VoLTE solution.
A complete base station with live ENodeB was set up on site and connected to the packet core and IMS network located at our SRN Labs in Tampere, Finland via a VPN tunnel. With this configuration, we were able to demonstrate an extremely fast call set-up time of around 1 second, HD voice and low latency video calling across the LTE network.
All four local operators have already launched their LTE networks in the Middle East, and are planning to initiate VoLTE services during the next two quarters. These events gave them a welcome opportunity to experience the superior level of service that VoLTE can provide withonly one fifth of the network resources typically used for a 3G call. How? The leaner LTE architecture creates significant savings – both in radio spectrum efficiency and core network simplifications.
The wow-factor was palpable. Operators were clearly excited about the benefits VoLTE represents – from the best rich voice service for LTE smartphone users to improved user experience and network performance.
