This blog is by Carlijn Adema at Nokia Solutions and Networks. Twitter: @CarlijnAdema Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take a fast train and work online as the world whizzes past your window? That way, travel wouldn’t eat up your work day. When travelling short distances in Europe, I’d actually prefer a high speed train over a plane IF I could secure a great 3G connection. At the moment, this feels more like a dream than reality. But why is it so difficult to get proper voice and data services in trains? It’s the ultimate place to serve high-value users who want to use mobile voice and data. Millions of people across the world commute daily, yet mobile broadband services are notoriously poor in trains. Is it too expensive to get a proper connection and decent speeds? Too many coverage holes along the train route? NSN has developed an optimization solution which analyzes and improves the network performance specifically along train routes. We filter data, locate nomadic users and get accurate insight on the performance of data and voice services. Then we identify critical issues and improve network and service quality using existing equipment prior to upgrading hardware. High-value users can of course be identified in order to improve the performance of their favorite applications throughout their journies. This solution was used to help a large European operator reduce dropped calls by 25% on train routes in its home country and increase throughput by 30%. In this case, the operator worked with the national train service to provide a differentiated service for first class passengers, and extended the service to other operators who did not want to invest heavily in train track coverage. Definitely an interesting strategy to generate additional revenue streams. Once the Optimization team has improved the performance along the train tracks, our Service Quality Management (SQM) kicks in to provide a near real-time monitoring solution so that immediate action can be taken if mobile services drop below certain thresholds. Our Systems Integrations experts can help operators integrate and tailor SQM for this specific use. So hop on board and help make excellent mobile broadband in trains a dream come true for commuters everywhere!
