It wasn’t so much a case of “seeing is believing” as one of “hearing is believing” when NSN recently showed its updated and enhanced live demonstration of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology at an operator’s offices in the UK.
The new, improved demonstration now includes the experience of voice call continuity (SRVCC) between LTE and 3G. It allows people to hear VoLTE-based calls started over LTE and continued seamlessly on 3G. It’s much like the call continuity we experience day-to-day when a phone moves between 2G and 3G networks.
The demo saw its live debut in September when NSN brought its LTE and 3G radio equipment to the UK operator’s offices. The other part of the demo is a VoLTE core network which
lives in Finland. Then, all that was needed was an IP connection between the operator site radio and the Finland core.
Everything worked perfectly, with excellent voice quality in LTE-to-LTE calls and a smooth SRVCC procedure that was repeated several times. Many in the customer audience expressed great satisfaction with the quality of the demo, with comments such as “I didn’t notice any interruption…” being typical.
The switch from LTE to 3G was unnoticeable, which may not seem very impressive, but it takes a lot of advanced technology and clever integration behind the scenes to make it all work seamlessly. The demo just goes to prove the high level of maturity of the NSN VoLTE solution, something we are ready to take on the road and show live on an operator’s home turf.
