Big events are impressive experiences! Whether you’re watching your favorite pop superstar, following your team in the cup final, or attending a major cultural festival, the companionship of the crowd, the play on the field, or the sheer joy of being where the action is, all these things add up to a great experience.
Less enjoyable are the traffic jams big events create – waiting to board a packed train home, sitting in a static line of cars at the car park exit, or standing in a long queue for the bus. Mobile networks get rammed with traffic too. Users find they cannot upload pictures from their smartphones and are often even unable to make simple voice calls. It can all be very frustrating.
Yet it doesn’t have to be this way. A few simple software upgrades can make all the difference to the big event experience. NSN recommends three software upgrades that can help tackle big event blues.
1. NSN’s Mass Event Handler (MEH) provides an uplink boost at big events for better services. Mass Event Handler automatically tunes networks for top performance during even the busiest events, where there’s typically more traffic on the uplink than on the downlink. End users get better access to services with higher performance, while operators no longer need to make manual adjustments. Results from a live network at a packed football stadium show substantially improved access and performance with the uplink no longer the bottleneck
2. NSN Voice Call Prioritization for High Traffic Load feature ensures that voice calls can get through. When network demand is high, users often find they cannot get through with their voice calls. Constant redialling results in a huge signalling load. Prioritizing voice call requests over data traffic in high load situations is proven in trials to reduce signalling and cut voice call blocking by 90-95%.
3. NSN’s Automatic Access Class Restriction is a software enhancement providing overload control to keep more subscribers happy. It automatically bars selected device access classes from the network and the number of restricted classes increases as overloading rises and reduces as demand falls. This ensures network stability even when overloaded and increases customer satisfaction.
