In 1990, the United Nations introduced “World Quality Day” to increase worldwide awareness of the value that Quality Management brings to organizations and countries. On November 14, social media was buzzing with “Happy World Quality Day” greetings from individuals, associations, and companies large and small. That same day, I had the privilege to host the sixth annual NSN Quality Awards with employees from all over the world who decided that they own quality every day!
These individuals represented cross-functional teams across NSN. They saw opportunities to improve our company quality – whether how we serve our customers or how we deliver our offerings, or how we empower and engage our people to make a difference – and they stepped up. These individuals made improving quality their personal call.
Standing ovation for our 2013 quality award winners
NSN has made quality a strategic priority. We are part of an information and communications (ICT) industry racing forward to enable individuals, companies and countries with mobile broadband, internet and cloud-based solutions that are increasingly important to our lives and economies – and increasingly complex to deliver with quality. We believe there is a call to action for our industry to work together across the ICT ecosystem to shape next generation quality, and we’re committing resources and management energy to do this. We’ve defined a roadmap for quality and set out three principles for our quality transformation: “Customer First”, “Execution Excellence”, and “I Own Quality”.
So it was quite fitting that our CEO, Rajeev Suri, and the entire Executive Board enjoyed World Quality Day with our NSN 2013 Quality Award Finalists. Sponsored by our CEO, the NSN Quality Award is an annual, company-wide competition that showcases and rewards outstanding achievements. This award is open to all teams that have achieved extraordinary results in the categories of Customer Excellence, Execution Excellence and People Excellence. All award finalists become company Quality ambassadors and enter the Quality Award Hall of Fame, where quality success stories and best practices are recognized all year long.
Through formally recognizing our employees for their quality contributions, we continue to learn a great deal. The number of employee nominations has increased dramatically over the years as their understanding and enthusiasm for quality has grown. We have witnessed amazing innovation and creativity as our people address customer challenges and help transform our business. We have seen our employees embrace new tools and processes as we embed quality disciplines in our everyday work. And most heart-warming is to see first-hand, the real passion and pride that comes from making an impact as a team and taking ownership for making quality happen.
Though our Executive Board had to make the difficult selection of only one winner in each category, it was evident to all of us watching the awards ceremony – either in person or via live stream to our employees all over the world who were tweeting and posting– that these finalists are all winners in our transformation journey. They truly OWN quality!
