This blog is by Volker Held, head of Industry Landscape for the Networks business of Nokia.
All operators know that their networks produce vast amounts of data every minute. Yet many willingly admit that they don’t know as much about the network as they would like to and, perhaps more importantly, about the subscribers that bring in the revenue.
The answer lies in taking this avalanche of network data and putting it to work. This way, network resources can be used effectively and revenue maximized from customers who receive the best possible experience. Easier said than done you might say – and you’d be right. A wireless network with 10 million subscribers creates about one million transactions per second during peak hours. And all this data needs to be checked in real-time by telco-scale big data analytics technology if it is to be of immediate use and give network users the quality of service they expect.
Nokia’s ‘Personalize the network experience’ approach and its underlying big data innovation aim to capture all signalling data across the network, take user and business data into account, and process the information accordingly.
Using this approach, operators can combine any type of network, session, customer and business data to “personalize” the user’s network experience. To be clear, this is not about “viewing” private messages and end user content, but about understanding and managing the network and services experience for those users in real time.
Personalizing the network experience will bring substantial benefits to operators: They can optimize revenues, costs and available resources simultaneously to build profitability.
Ambitious maybe, but the Networks business of Nokia is already experiencing success with its Retina innovation project where a million messages a second can be processed in an operator’s live network. In other words, it won’t be long before operators can truly harness big data potential and use it to transform their network performance.
