Total network energy consumption is growing year on year due to growing networks and data traffic. Hence, by 2020, telecom operators have committed to decrease energy consumption – not only because of the world wide emission reduction targets on CO2, but also to achieve profit improvements.
But did you know that the energy used on sites does not always go to serve the purpose it’s meant to? In one case, an operator estimated fuel theft in his network to be 5%, which translates into over 2 million liters of fuel per year (based on a network of 2000 sites with generators running 24/7). Nokia’s Site Energy Management System (SEMS) helps our customers manage and forecast the energy usage by enabling remote access to real-time energy data in their telecom sites.
Various types of energy-related equipment can be monitored. Nokia’s SEMS solution provides visibility to the real energy consumption on sites, where for instance oil-fueled generators are used to provide power to off-grid sites. This solution can be built into in all kinds of telecom sites – grid powered sites, bad-grid* and off-grid sites – independent of which type of base station is installed.
Get a grip on site energy data – anytime, anywhere
Here are 3 ways to use SEMS for energy data monitoring:
1. Fuel management: In generator-run sites, fuel theft is unfortunately a common occurrence. SEMS allows for remote monitoring of fuel levels and not only helps operators immediately detect the thefts, but also to forecast and plan for the optimal scheduling of fuel refills, as well as check on the accuracy of agreed deliveries, for example.
2. AC/DC power metering: AC/DC power metering provides power consumption data for both AC and/or DC levels and can trigger alarms in cases of abnormal power consumption. An operator discovered that a significant and sudden peak in a site’s power consumption was the result of an outsider connecting large and power-hungry manufacturing purposed equipment to the site’s grid…
The logging of energy data and power consumption for a site enables operators to (remotely) check and validate energy bills. Based on the available numbers, they are also able to forecast the energy needs of specific sites more accurately and optimize energy procurement in general.
3. Free cooling and air conditioning management: SEMS provides operators with a remote connection and view of the temperature behavior of the site, which is beneficial in managing the equipment lifecycle. Temperature monitoring of free cooling cabinets is also important because – although they don’t use energy-guzzling compressors to regulate internal temperatures – they do use expensive air conditioning when the cabinets overheat. Reducing the runtime of any air conditioning will result in higher energy efficiency and improve the carbon footprint.
How does it work? Nokia SEMS is a cloud-based management system, does not require any local server installation on site, and is accessible anywhere, anytime. Multiple devices can be connected for all required energy data, alarms, remote parameter settings, etc.
