In the fashion industry, “virtualization” would be the new black – everyone is talking about it. No wonder, because the benefits are tempting. But for them to really materialize, some careful planning is needed.
We’ve come a long way already. The Nokia NetAct network management system is quite different nowadays compared to the OSS it used to be in the early stages. With the latest application renewals, operators can manage the network faster and easier. And when providing one view of the network or combining a number of functionalities into the same tool, it really is all about the simplification of these operations. On top of that, NetAct improves the control of the network – control which is so badly needed.
A further practical example of the benefits from virtualization is the functionality such as the stretched cluster, which enables operators to keep their network operations running even if there are unexpected spikes in demand or in the unlikely event that a Network Operations Center goes down. This is hot stuff that developers didn’t even dream of 10-15 years ago! And it’s real, live and operational today – not just in specification or testing phase anymore.
Virtualized NetAct is being used by our customers today to manage their networks. One such network has 50,000 eNodeB’s and as new sites are deployed, more and more eNodeB’s are managed every day by OSS. So the usage of virtualized NetAct has become, as another operator stated, “business as usual”.
The NetAct rollout continues with exciting first implementations – but there is still room for the development of telco cloud expertise. In our last Simplify Operations webinar in June, we asked the audience where it sees the biggest need for future investment. The clear majority thought it was to invest in developing personnel expertise. And indeed, having the right competences and expertise is very important when taking OSS to the cloud era.
Virtualized networks are not happening overnight. Smooth co-operation between vendors and operators is needed for continuous competence development in the OSS virtualization area: We both learn more when doing it together. This also leads to improvements in our OSS solution to the benefit of real business value for our customers.
