Nokia spearheads TDD-FDD convergence and TD-LTE-Advanced at GTI, Taiwan
The recent launch of the iPhone6 and iPhone6+ for all major bands of TD-LTE and TDD-FDD dual mode created quite a buzz at the GTI Taiwan event on September 16-17, 2014. China Mobile also announced the exciting news that it had hit the 30 million TD-LTE subscriber mark at the end of August 2014. Nokia then took the reins, highlighting the “under the hood” requirements for TDD-FDD convergence and TD-LTE-Advanced that will further cultivate the TD-LTE ecosystem, enable the Smart City concept for Taiwan and other countries, and deliver stunning user experiences.
Here’s a short list of Nokia’s contributions at GTI in Taiwan:
• Nokia and Chunghwa Telecom demonstrated TDD-FDD offloading and load balancing at the booth and TDD-FDD handover on the streets of Taipei. Nokia was first to showcase TDD-FDD offloading and load balancing at Mobile World Congress 2013 and now scores another first with this Smart City plan of Taiwan. Nokia and Chunghwa Telecom arranged a demo bus to showcase the TDD-FDD convergence.
• Multiple TDD-FDD indoor and outdoor demos, combined with TDD-FDD carrier aggregation achievements from Mobile Asia Expo 2014, provided convincing evidence on TDD-FDD convergence.
• Key Summit presentations included: Nokia’s head of Technology for Greater China, Vicky Zhang, presented “Bringing convergence to life, looking ahead to the connected world”. Noel Kirkaldy, TD-LTE Sales Development AMEA at Nokia, presented TD-LTE-Advanced. Nokia’s head of Industry Environment APAC, Chang Jiang, co-authored, presented and published the GTI Licensed Shared Access (LSA) white paper. Yogendra Shukla, Nokia’s head of TD-LTE Business Development, highlighted TDD-FDD load and traffic management.
The live field demonstrations of Nokia and Chunghwa Telecom provided first-hand experience of TDD-FDD convergence using seamless TDD-FDD handovers over four high-data usage applications: Hami TV, HD video streaming, HD conference call, and 3D map navigation were used in the “TDD-FDD LTE bus”. The 20 minute, 2 km demo route was installed with TD-LTE and FDD LTE frequency bands so that guests could test each application and then verify them with the monitoring tool. The National Communications Commission (NCC) temporarily granted bands 3 and 41 to help make this eleventh GTI workshop a success.
