There were a lot of reasons to get excited about the future of mobile at this year’s Mobile World Congress 2015. And here’s a good one: Flash Networks and Nokia Networks announced a collaboration to provide our Layer8™ monetization solution. You can see Layer8 in action here.
For those of you who missed the announcement, Layer8 enables operators’ messages and over-the-top (OTT) content to appear on top of the mobile browser in the right context at the right time, without the need to download an app.
This lucrative new real-estate can be used by operators for two main purposes. First, operators can generate new monetization opportunities by presenting OTT content and services, such as price comparison, coupons, local content recommendations, app recommendations, and more to their subscribers (see right image). And second, operators can use Layer8 as an engagement and promotion tool by offering real-time account information, promoting their own services including data upsell packages, and creating brand awareness – all from the standard mobile browser.
All this content is accessed through a non-intrusive “curl” (like a page turn, see left image) which appears on the user’s mobile browser and opens only when the user chooses to do so. The content is all highly relevant and targeted, which delivers the additional value.
I believe that, together with Nokia Networks, we are creating not only massive amounts of new advertising and content inventory on the mobile browser, but also an entirely new market space by fundamentally changing the dynamics between mobile operators and OTT players. In a nutshell, it will enable them to cooperate in a win-win model for OTT revenues that also delivers new value to the subscriber.
Several months into the cooperation with Nokia Networks, it’s clear that our partnership capitalizes on the strengths of our respective organizations – Nokia Networks’ spirit of innovation and its excellent customer and partner relationships, combined with Flash Networks’ technological expertise in mobile monetization.
The Layer8 solution is already well established in the market, having been selected by seven leading mobile operators around the world. It is currently being deployed for 50 million subscribers with a growth potential of up to 200 million in 2015. Together with Nokia Networks, we have the potential to bring new market opportunities to operators, OTT players, and subscribers on a global scale. This is a whole new way of engaging with value creating content and I believe it will be a win-win-win proposition for all involved.
