Nokia Networks recently gained its 100th small cell customer. As I write this blog, that figure has risen to 103 and counting, with many readily opting for multiple products and services.

The number of operators committing to Nokia small cell products and services is growing at an accelerating rate. New projects are popping up everywhere: from the Americas, to Europe, Middle East and Africa – to China, India and APAC – all the way across to Australasia.
Operators, often in the more advanced LTE markets, are increasingly using small cells to help them build the outdoor capacity they need to meet rising traffic demand. There is a growing need for indoor coverage in all markets. And let’s not forget the extreme demands of large-scale special events such as concerts and sports events, for which small cells provide a cost-effective solution.
Small cells technology is advancing rapidly too, making them much more flexible and attractive for operators. For example, the innovative features of Nokia small cells include base stations that are the smallest and lightest available, true all-in-one design (unlike some solutions that need many extra boxes per pole), and parity of software and processing capacity with macro base stations for easy integration into Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets).
Furthermore, our Flexi Zone Controller can support more than 500 hot spot access points to create large hot zones that behave as a single access point as far as the rest of the network is concerned. Indoors, the relaxation of backhaul requirements means that our small cells can be deployed indoors re-using the existing LAN infrastructure for a very cost-effective deployment.
Nokia small cells work in all macro networks
It’s important to note that many Nokia small cells products are also being installed under macrocellular networks provided by other vendors. This shows that Nokia small cells function well in such complex scenarios to deliver their benefits regardless of the macro network.
China is a prime market for small cells where we also worked with China Mobile Shanghai to accomplish the world’s first TD-LTE Advanced small cell carrier aggregation in a live operator network. The deployment achieved peak data transmission rates in excess of 220 Mbps.
Meanwhile, on the services side, we have just launched our HetNet Engine Room service that simplifies the evaluation of potential small cell sites, for 30 percent faster deployment with 20 percent lower costs to serve 10 percent more subscribers.
It is innovations like these that are helping drive the accelerating small cells market.
