The age of Ultra Dense Networks is approaching, and with it a swelling population of base stations deployed to meet growing capacity demands. If you are a mobile operator, then I’m sure the thought of climbing countless towers for installation and maintenance has certainly crossed your mind.
So what solutions are currently available for operators to prepare their 3G and 4G networks that can be customized and cope with this demand, but are still cost effective?
Normally I blog about TD-LTE topics that get my heart racing, and this one is no exception because it’s an industry first – and yes, it will reduce your tower climbing!
Introducing Nokia’s new TD-LTE-Advanced Dual Band 8-pipe radio and Integrated Antenna, 2-pipe radio, weighing in at just 5 kg!
TD-LTE-A Integrated Antenna 2-pipe radio
Operators are typically faced with the need for customized deployments in different network topologies, where mounting space for base stations may well be limited. With its light weight and compact structure, the Integrated Antenna, 2-pipe radio is great for building new sites or adding more capacity to new sites. It can be mounted anywhere – all you need is a fiber connection between the radio and the baseband.
But I think it’s most remarkable for what it doesn’t need – no separate antennas, no separate antenna installations, no large cable connections between radio and antenna, and no heavy equipment for installation. Operators can even use their own antennas if they need to.
2-in-1 means you’re only climbing the tower once!
Operators can also benefit from another new industry first Nokia solution, a TD-LTE-Advanced Dual Band 8-pipe radio that can simultaneously operate on both the 1.9 GHz and the 2.6 GHz bands. Band 41 in 2.6 GHz is available in most countries and around 20 countries use the 1.9 GHz band, making this solution a great opportunity for operators to cost- effectively update their networks to TD-LTE-Advanced with a single radio. Operators who’ve trialled this novel innovation already love it as they don’t have to buy two separate radios and don’t have to climb the tower twice.
2 new radios = multiple customized options and deployment topologies
Consider this example of a joint deployment comprising a Dual band 8-pipe radio + Integrated Antenna 2-pipe radio using a Single RAN Flexi Multiradio System Module.
This combination allows the operator to provide both wide coverage using the 8-pipe radio and intense capacity using 2 bands each with multiple sectors and carriers at the same time. Even more capacity can be added using multiple Integrated Antenna 2-pipe radios within the given cell. This translates to fewer large and super high capacity sites, fewer site units to install and overall lower total cost of ownership compared to traditional deployment.
Evolving to Ultra Dense Networks will require this kind of adaptable solution and help ensure that your mobile customers can enjoy the bandwidth and data rates they need for advanced applications.
