Attendees at sporting and music events are becoming increasingly more active participants. Social media is changing how teams and music acts interact with their fans and affects how often fans are exposed to content from those they follow. No longer are event attendees content to simply be passive viewers. They want access to additional views, extra content, and real-time updates and information. And they want to be able to share pictures and videos with their friends and family as the event takes place.
Advances in augmented reality and virtual reality present a number of opportunities to provide transformed experiences for event attendees inside the stadium. They also make it possible to provide new, different experiences for those who want to enjoy it remotely – either at home or in other venues, such as pubs or fan-zones.
New camera technologies, such as miniature portable webcams, Nokia OZO 360 VR camera or ‘bullet-shot’ camera arrays, help event organizers to enhance the event experience. Think of all those incredible live streams from drone based cameras too. By filming the action on the field, the half time show, or the amazing stage show in new immersive ways, it’s possible to create new content that truly recreates the up-close experience for those viewers elsewhere.
In order to meet the challenges of hosting and broadcasting live events, and to take full advantage of the opportunities they present, venue owners, event organizers and service providers need to invest in 5G networks.
Only 5G has the ability to replicate reality across time and across locations at scale. The new video technologies required to create a truly immersive experience for spectators, combined with the high density of users, demands extreme throughput and low latency, which cannot realistically be met by WiFi or LTE.

They’re able to view and hear the action in immersive VR, soak up the atmosphere and create lasting memories. Every user can have the same high-quality experience at home or in mobile environments as if you were right there in the stadium.
With ultra-broadband throughput and low latency enabled by 5G end-to-end networks, we’re able to widen the context in which the audience can experience these events. For example, as social networking usage expands, the ability for fans to interact with their favorite artists or sports stars in virtual environments – whether at home, on the road or on the train – becomes a reality.
The content can also be augmented by providing additional value through ie. player statistics or targeted advertising embedded in the immersive display. And for venue and event owners, safety and security is increasingly important, so the ability to have interoperable systems with public safety and law enforcement is critical. 5G network slicing will enable the support of these diverse use cases, with very different requirements, on the one set of 5G infrastructure.
5G is coming and its impact will be enormous. Sporting events and concerts will clearly benefit as it has the ability to provide connectivity and capacity at massive scale – inside and outside the event location. With 5G, there won’t be a bad seat in the house!
