The third speaker in this session was Ken Banks, founder Kiwanja.net. His paper, Strengthening Democracy via SMS, introduced another innovative and important service and application, called Frontline SMS.
This is a free text messaging service, designed for NFP organisations, to turn your PC into a SMS gateway to both send and receive text messages. It is developed for use in “frontline” environments and is being used in applications such as
- citizen-monitoring of elections
- communicating news via sms
- blood donor recruitment
- assisting human rights workers
- etc – for a more complete list of applications of this service please visit the frontline website
Once again, this is an innovative use of mobile technology that aims to make a tangiable difference to our global society.
During his presentation, Ken also introduced the NGO competition held last year to promote NGO awareness for the opportunities available from mobile technologies. Please visit www.nGOmobile.org for more details of this. As you can see from the winners of this competition there is vast scope for mobile technology here: “
