The transfer of Nokia’s Mobile Broadcasting Solution platform to Wipro marks an important milestone for our success in delivering Mobile TV via service providers, and giving all of us the sorts of mobile services we want.
Given the coverage of this move, it is important to clarify that the transfer of Nokia’s Mobile Broadcasting Solution (MBS) to Wipro (for example in this brief news article) misses some important points in terms of our involvement in the Mobile TV ecosystem.
We – Nokia Siemens Networks – will continue to play a key role in the Mobile TV space and the transfer of Nokia’s MBS platform to Wipro strengthens our presence, and can help grow our market share. It fits our strategic direction to grow our services and build solutions from best-in-class product offerings.
Let’s quickly examine the history of this deal. Wipro and our own Consulting and Systems Integration (CSI) business have a close working relationship, and Wipro has been the key subcontractor to provide the MBS platform. In addition, we have been the leading go-to-market-partner for Nokia since our foundation and we continue to scale up Mobile TV system sales and customer care.
The three companies together make up the Mobile TV solution value chain – from the end user device to the source of content. We bring a clear commitment to the Mobile TV space, global reach and a system integration capability that allows us to provide E2E solutions. Wipro lends its expertise in developing mobile TV middleware software. Of course, all of this will be supported by Nokia’s mobile phones.
As competition heats up, it makes sense for each company to focus on its core strengths, and further bolster its value proposition. A strategic, long-term, three-way partnership therefore, brings many advantages for all of us, as well as for our customers.
So how will the model work? We will manage customer contracts, globally sell and deliver the MBS platform as part of a Mobile TV offering through our CSI business, and remain a part of the innovation process towards a converged media solution. Wipro will continue to develop the DVB-H middleware software business of Nokia’s MBS. And Nokia will develop, market, and sell DVB-H enabled devices and accessories.
This close work with partners across the industry enables us to help deliver the communications experience that we all want via our mobile phones.
