Public safety agencies around the world are facing an increasing need to adopt efficient, interoperable communications solutions with support for video and data services. Many countries are considering the best technology choice for the future, while some very early adopters are already one step ahead.
The Ministry of Interior (MoI) in Qatar made the decision to go for LTE already in 2010, building its mission-critical network together with Nokia. Today, the public safety LTE network in Qatar has practically reached nation-wide coverage and emergency service workers are seeing clear benefits of high-speed data in their daily work.
In Qatar, Mol’s telecom department provides different agencies like fire brigades, medical emergency services and internal security forces with broadband LTE services. In addition to mission-critical data services, MoI is also adopting Voice over LTE (VoLTE). When new, standardized public safety-specific features become available, such as the recent addition of push-to-talk, they can be introduced with software upgrades to the existing network.
Ali Salem Al-Henzab, Brigadier-Engineer, Director, Telecoms Department at the Ministry of Interior, State of Qatar is happy with the decision to go for LTE, noting that: “LTE is the right system to provide communications between control center and emergency service workers. Earlier, they were just depending on voice, and now they see a live picture with full visibility to what is really going on.”
Urbanization is a global trend affecting also the State of Qatar. Cities will represent 70% of the world’s population by 2020, which calls for greater efficiency in services aimed for citizens and integrated tools for governmental agencies. Governments need to carefully plan their resources and respond to emergency situations faster. Interoperable, scalable network infrastructure is the key foundation for a well-functioning, safer and smarter city with real-time video and data services and advanced analytics.
Brigadier-Engineer Al-Henzab believes that MoI Qatar made a future-proof choice in selecting LTE as their technology platform. Working closely together with Nokia and participating in 3GPP standardization work has given the Ministry an opportunity to implement LTE with confidence right from the start and be ready for next-generation public safety services today.
